Bipolar and Related Disorders

Bipolar and related disorders are according to DSM 5TR after the category of Schizophrenia spectrum disorder and before the category of Depressive Disorders as according to nature of Bipolar disorders they are as a bridge between both of them. According to symptoms, genetics and family history bipolar disorders are laying between psychotic and depressive disorders.

Basic Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorders are about intense mood and emotional states of a person which effect the working ability of the person and impacts on the energy of the person. The two basic states of mood are

Manic

Hypomanic

Person sometime have intensely happy mood and some time he or she depressive episodes. When he or she have intensely happy mood the depressive mood symptoms disappears.

Person without bipolar disorder also experience mood fluctuations but their mood fluctuations are not with extreme behavioral changes which effect their relationships and their daily life. The people with bipolar disorder experience mood changes which cause difficulty in their social relations and in their daily life.

Types od Bipolar Disorders

According to DSM5TR Bipolar and Related Disorders are:

  1. Bipolar I disorder
  2. Bipolar II Disorder
  3. Cyclothymic
  4. Substance and Medication Induce Bipolar Disorder
  5. Bipolar Disorder due to Another Medical Condition

As in Bipolar disorder person have mood fluctuations. Individual always not experience depressive mood but he or she sometime experience manic episodes (mood elevation or extremely happy) and sometimes he or she experiences depressive episodes. The major difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II is deference between the severities of mania.

  • Person with Bipolar I disorder will experience manic episodes while a person with Bipolar IIbipolar disorder Disorder will have hypomanic episodes.
  • A person with bipolar II disorder some time experience symptoms of depressive episode while a person with Bipolar II disorder will always experience symptoms of major depressive episodes.

Cyclothymic disorder is diagnosed when a person experiences symptoms of both hypomanic episodes and depressive episodes for the duration of two years.

Bipolar disorder run in families as various studies on bipolar disorder revealed that there are 80 to 90 % bipolar patients who have family history of bipolar or related disorders or depression.
