Developmental Coordination Disorder

Developmental coordination disorder is neurodevelopmental disorder its symptoms appear during the early developmental stages of life but cannot be diagnosed before the age of 5 years. In this disorder child shows delay in achieving developmental milestones. The motor skills of child are below the chronological age of the child and below the educational level of life. It is

lack of development and coordination due to the brain not transmitting messages

 accurately due to any damage. It is also called developmental dyspraxia.

Diagnostic criteria of Developmental cordination disorder

The diagnostic criteria of developmental coordination disorder according to DSM 5TR is mentioned below.

Diagnostic Criteria A.

The child is slow in learning the developmental coordination skills and have low ability to implement these skills as compare to other child of the same age are doing. The developmental motor skills of child are below the chronological age of the child. The motor skills like dropping or catching an object, using cutlery for eating, and handwriting skills of the child are below that are required at the age. The child have difficulty in participating in sports.

Diagnostic Criteria B

The motor skills deficiency mentioned in Criterion A are to the extent that significantly restricts the daily activities of life which are appropriate to chronological age of the child. For example child lag behing in self maintenance activities required at the age and self-care etc. the delay in coordination effects the academic productivity of child and also effects paly and leisure.

Diagnostic Criteria C

The symptoms of Developmental coordination disorder starts to appear in early developmental period of life.

Diagnostic Criteria D

The deficit in motor skills is nor due to intellectual developmental disorder or visual impairments or any other neurological condition.

Prevalence of developmental coordination disorder

The developmental coordination disorder is ratio from 5% to 8% in the children age ranges from 5 to 11 years of age. Males have high prevalence of developmental coordination disorder as compare to females.
