What are Substance Induced Psychotic Disorders?
Substance or medication induce psychotic disorders are psychotic disorders due to the effect of any medication or substance or due to the withdrawal from any substance. In substance induce psychotic disorder the psychotic symptoms start to develop after the use of substances like alcohol, or any other drug. The psychotic episodes are experienced when a person is using any of these intoxicated substance or when he or she is not using these substances. In psychotic episodes of substance induce psychotic disorder a person is unable to feel the difference between of whether it is real or not real.
Substance induce psychotic disorder usually occur when a person is using alcohol, cocaine, opioids, hallucinogens, cannabis and amphetamines. The symptoms after withdrawal are often for a brief period of time and start after the withdrawal of the substance.
Diagnostic Criteria of Substance Induced Psychotic Disorders
The symptoms of substance induce psychotic disorder according to DSM5TR as mentioned below
Diagnostic Criteria A.
The psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia are present including
- Delusions.
- Hallucinations.
Diagnostic Criteria B.
While in patient history and physical examination of the patient there are evidences of both (1) and (2)
- The symptoms of delusions and hallucinations which are mentioned in Criterion A start to develop during the use of substance or start to develop after soon after stopping the use of substance or after withdrawal of substance in substance induce psychotic disorder.
- The substance used by individual either a drug or medicine is capable of producing the symptoms of hallucinations and delusions.
Diagnostic Criteria C.
The psychotic disturbance is not due to any psychotic reasons but it must be due to substance used by the individual.
Diagnostic Criteria D.
The psychotic disturbance must be due to substance use and must not occur during delirium episode.
Diagnostic Criteria E.
The psychotic disturbance effects the daily life routine of the person and cause impairment in person’s social, academic and occupational life.
Causes of Substance Induced Psychotic Disorders
There are many causes of substance induced psychotic disorders one of them are mentioned below
- Any brain stroke or brain injury can cause psychotic disorder
- Any brain lesions can cause substance induce psychotic disorder
- Sometime genetic abnormalities can also cause psychotic disorders
- Psychotic disorder induced by substance can be due to side effect of any medicine.
