Causes of Communication Disorder
A child during his or her developmental stage of life may be at risk for a communication disorder if there is a history of the following:
- Prematurity or traumatic birth
- Cleft lip or cleft palate
- Craniofacial anomalies
- Dental malocclusion
- Velopharyngeal insufficiency
- Oral-motor dysfunction
- Vocal fold pathology
- Neurological disease or dysfunction or brain injury
- Respirator dependency, respiratory compromise, or tracheostomy
- Developmental delay
- Autism
- Hearing loss or deafness
