Causes of Communication Disorder

A child during his or her developmental stage of life may be at risk for a communication disorder if there is a history of the following:

  • Prematurity or traumatic birth
  • Cleft lip or cleft palate
  • Craniofacial anomalies
  • Dental malocclusion
  • Velopharyngeal insufficiency
  • Oral-motor dysfunction
  • Vocal fold pathology
  • Neurological disease or dysfunction or brain injury
  • Respirator dependency, respiratory compromise, or tracheostomy
  • Developmental delay
  • Autism
  • Hearing loss or deafness
