What is Brief Psychotic Disorder?

Brief psychotic disorder is type of schizophrenia spectrum disorder. This is a sudden occurrence of schizophrenia symptoms including delusions, hallucinations, disorganized motor behavior or disorganized thoughts but these lasts for a day or more than a day but duration is always less than a month to diagnose this disorder. In this disorder after treatment person fully returns to its normally functioning. This disorder is different from schizophrenia and schizophreniform disorder due to its duration. As in schizphrenia the mentioned symptoms must be oresent for atleast a year but in brief psychotic disorder these symptoms delusion, hallucinations, disorganized speech or disorganized motor behaviours must be present for less than a month and more than a day.

Diagnostic criteria of Brief Psychotic Disorder

Diagnostic Criteria A

One or more than one symptoms of schizophrenia are present or at least one of them must be present for diagnosis

  1. Delusions.
  2. Hallucinations.
  3. Disorganized speech
  4. Catatonic behavior (Disorganized Behaviour)

Note: Do not include a symptom if it is a culturally sanctioned response.

Diagnostic Criteria B

The duration for one episode of any of the above symptoms is at least 1 day and it must be less than 1 month. After treatment and medications person returns to its premorbid level of functioning.

Diagnostic Criteria C

The behavioral disturbance is not due to bipolar or depressive disorder or not due to any other psychotic disorder.

Specify Brief Psychotic Disorder if:

With marked stressor(s):

if these symptoms occur right after any stressful event in individual’s life.

Without marked stressor(s):

If symptoms did not occur right after or in response to stressful events

With peripartum onset:

If symptoms starts to develop during pregnancy or within first four weeks of postpartum.

With catatonia:

if symptoms are associated with catatonia or another mental disorder
